"Saw" - Scared the *&$% out of me
Quite possibly the scariest movie I have ever seen as an adult. "Silence of the Lambs" scary. The friend I went with, a 40 year old man, literally left his chair during one scene. launched forward and hissed "JEEEZUS!!" The audience was whimpering. I won't go into much detail for those who haven't seen it BUT the at the end of the movie....I wouldn't dare.
Leaving the theatre I couldn't stop talking about the absolute horror I felt. The imagery was frightening, horrific, grotesque, uplifting in a strange artsy way. The fact that someone created such a demented movie excited me; gave me hope that movies aren't doomed to follow the same formula over and over simply with different characters. I think Hollywood was sensing this too, hence the release of "un-whatevered Mind" (missed it) and "I heart Huckabees" (loved/hated it) and several other out of the mainstream flicks this year and last.
SAW re-ignited the creative, risk taking, "we're not sure if this is too much for the audience but we'll give it to them anyway" type of moviemaking I think was missing.
That night, I actually had nightmares, woke up at 2:30am to find Megan working on her brief. I was comforted that she was awake to walk me downstairs to the bathroom. I didn't want to be alone with fresh residue from SAW dripping out of my dreams. Frightening movie. Go see it.
